Words can make a difference. - Free Online Library

“Placism

The first thing we can do is extend the usual bases for unjust discrimination - sex, race, age, etc., - to include location. The home and the womb are locations, places. I therefore propose the word “placism” (rhymes with racism) to denote discrimination against stay-at-home mothers and unborn children. Societies are placist when they devalue unpaid work in the home. Governments practice placial discrimination if they tax single-income homes more steeply than others. Judges are placially intolerant when they deny rights in the womb that they affirm in the cradle. The feminist movement is a cauldron of placism because of its support of abortion.

Placism is more common than we might think. We are apt to overlook it because until now it has lacked a name. The tendency of socialist governments to subordinate rural to urban interests is placially inspired. Country bumpkin, in fact, is a placial epithet ep·i·thet
n.
1.
a. A term used to characterize a person or thing, such as rosy-fingered in rosy-fingered dawn or the Great in Catherine the Great.

b. . Tariffs that enrich industrialists in one part of a nation at the expense of consumers in another might well be placist. So might subsidies that discourage workers from moving out of depressed areas.”

Leola on “placism”

“The application of the death penalty has been shown time and again to be fundamentally flawed. It is bound by racism, whether the participants in the machinery of death are white or black; by “placism,” where one lives in Nebraska or across the river in Iowa; and by classism, whether one is rich or poor. Capital punishment is an inherently flawed and barbaric practice. The NAACP remains steadfastly committed to common sense, morality, and justice. The NAACP,
therefore, calls upon this Legislature to abolish capital punishment. Thank you.”

Far too often, managers think they have found the solution to this problem when they see lots of energetic activity: where people sometimes run from meeting to meeting, preparing endless PowerPoint presentations; where people have agendas containing a long list of activities; where people seem willing to abandon the status quo; where people seem to have a great sense of urgency. But more often than not, this flurry of behavior is not driven by any underlying determination to move and win, now. It’s driven by pressures that create anxiety and anger. The resulting frantic activity is more distracting than useful. This is a false sense of urgency that may be even more destructive than complacency because it drains needed energy in activity and not productivity.

Meditation with Cheryl Richardson

Meditation with Cheryl Richardson
As we go through this guided visualization, just be with yourself.

Don’t worry about the results or getting anything.

Just be with yourself.

Gently close your eyes and take some relaxing breaths in a way that feels comfortable to you.

Just breathe.

Feel your body in the chair.
Feel your feet on the floor.

As you breathe, imagine that you are inhabiting yourself. Imagine each breath is just filling you and allowing you to relax.

While you’re breathing, imagine someplace where you feel comforted.
It might be the bath.
A place where you feel comfortable.
Maybe lying on the ground in a beautiful meadow.
Or on a bench in your favorite garden or park.
You might imagine lying at a beach with the warm sun on your body.

Just relax into this place.

Follow your breath. Let your breath take you there.

As you rest in this place, just ponder the question: Why am I here?

Ask yourself that. Why am I here?

You might just feel a deepening sense of peace.
You may see an image or hear a word.

Just sit with this question: Why am I here?

What are you called to do?
What’s calling you in your life?

Simply notice anything that comes to mind, and enjoy this time with yourself.

Know that there’s a very wise and loving part of you that resides within you, and is always there for you. You can always turn there for anything. This is the first place to come to.

Just breathe.

When you’re ready, thank that wise part of you for being there, for allowing you these few moments of peace and connection.

Gently begin to come back to the room.
Feel your body in the chair.
Return to the present moment.
And when you’re ready, gently open your eyes.

Stopping Repetitive Thoughts

The basic premise behind thought stopping is that if anxiety provoking thoughts are paired with relaxation, their repetitiveness can be reduced exponentially which results in anxiety reduction. In other words, if the thoughts that make you nervous become associated with relaxation, they will be reduced. While initially you may have a repetitive thought that interferes with your daily thoughts 600 times a day, using this technique you can usually cut it in half on a daily basis. This means that you can reduce these recurrent thoughts to just 5 times a day in seven days’ time. The method by which thought stopping is achieved is quite simple. 1. When experiencing a recurring thought that causes anxiety, you should first say “Stop.” This introduces the idea to yourself to stop having these thoughts. You can say it out loud or to yourself but this is a necessary first step.

Mechanisms of Stress - Stress Management Techniques from Mind Tools

There are two types of instinctive stress response that are important to how we understand stress and stress management: the short-term “Fight-or-Flight” response and the long-term “General Adaptation Syndrome”. The first is a basic survival instinct, while the second is a long-term effect of exposure to stress. A third mechanism comes from the way that we think and interpret the situations in which we find ourselves.
