There are so many areas where I just think, wow, people are really misusing technology. If only we could rewrite it. Any area that’s not online, any industry that isn’t related to the Internet is misusing technology — from hospitals to car dealerships to voting machines. Oh my God, voting machines is such a great one, where any idiot with a computer science degree could write a secure voting machine. It’s not that complicated. For some reason it’s very hard to get around that problem, and it’s so frustrating to watch when the solutions aren’t particularly complicated at all.

Which is one of the reasons McDonald’s decided to pursue a carve-out rather than build the business internally. After all, why would Burger King ever buy software created by its archenemy? But more important, McDonald’s didn’t want its carve-out to distract the company from doing what it does best–sell hamburgers. “For 45 years, we have been busy perfecting a business model we are in love with,” says Mats Lederhausen, McDonald’s vice president of corporate strategy. “Any loss of focus from our McDonald’s business is just a stupid idea.”
